The kids are back in school, the air is a little cooler in the mornings and soon tree leaves will start to change into beautiful colors. Besides being a great time for reflection on a great summer, it is an excellent time to plant trees and shrubs, divide perennials, and get your lawn prepped and fed for the long winter months. If you plan to sell your home in the spring it is a good idea to make sure your home will have great curb appeal by working on your yard now.
Planting Trees and Shrubs
Fall is a good time to plant trees and shrubs so the roots will have time to get established before the spring growing season. When choosing a tree or shrub keep in mind how big it will grow, the soil conditions it needs, and how fast it will grow. When deciding where to put a tree keep in mind that it may be small now but one day reach its full growth potential. Homeowners do not want trees to touch home siding or grow into power lines.
Divide Perennials
Dividing perennials will help keep the plant healthy and will provide homeowners with free additional plants for themselves or to give to a friend. Most perennials need to be divided every three to five years. Make sure to water the plant thoroughly the day before dividing, divide on a cloudy day, and make sure to water the plant until the roots get established.
Feed Your Lawn
Feeding your lawn now will insure that it will be a lush green lawn this spring. You can either hire a company to come and fertilize your lawn or do it yourself. There are many products you can buy to do so. A great natural, inexpensive lawn fertilizer is Epsom Salt, just add it to water and spray your lawn. It is also a good idea to adjust your lawnmower to allow grass to grow a little longer.
With a little hard work now your yard will look great in the spring and stand out if you are thinking about selling.
